Manchester United will not make any marquee signings in January and will instead look to cut costs by offloading players, according to reports.

Manchester United spent £145million on new players in the summer, breaking the transfer record with Paul Pogba’s arrival.

Manager Jose Mourinho was afforded freedom to splash the cash but has so far failed to convert success in the transfer market into results on the pitch.

United have won just one in their last seven league games and sit eight points adrift of league leaders Manchester City. But the Daily Star Sunday claim Mourinho’s failings will not be resolved through major transfers in January.

According to the report, United have no plans to secure landmark deals midway through the season.
In fact, they will instead seek to get rid of some dead wood in the squad, with the exiled Bastian Schweinsteiger likely to leave.

Matteo Darmian has also been mooted with a return to Italy, although the former Torino star may have a chance to prove himself following Antonio Valencia’s six-week lay-off with a broken arm.

Manchester United have been linked with a string of players, with a centre-half their main priority after Eric Bailly’s fresh knee injury.

Antonio Rudiger has been linked to the Old Trafford outfit and could supposedly leave Roma for around £35million.

But Chelsea’s rival interest and United’s reluctance to spend big in the New Year may scupper that proposed move.

Express Sport understands Mourinho has instructed his board to work on a deal to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid  but that move would only go through at the end of the season.

Likewise, it is understood United have been tracking Celtic striker Moussa Dembele and may make an offer for the ex-Fulham star next summer.

However, Real Madrid are also thought to be eyeing the 20-year-old and his value has rocketed to £40m.
